About Us

During 2011, Central Arkansas became one of 29 regional areas to receive a regional planning grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under the Sustainable Communities Initiative. The goal of the Sustainable Communities grants was to help communities and regions improve their economic competiveness by connecting housing with good jobs, quality schools and transportation.

The grant of $1.4 million over three years was used to more fully integrate multiple components of long-range planning for housing, economic development, environment and health issues, along with transportation. The grant was implemented through the Imagine Central Arkansas Partners and supports the development of the long range plan for Central Arkansas (Imagine Central Arkansas). The Partners included representatives from local governments, universities, economic development organizations, housing authorities, and others. The Partners worked closely with the Regional Planning Advisory Council throughout the development of Imagine Central Arkansas.

As a grantee, Central Arkansas is recognized as a Preferred Sustainability Status Community. Grant applicants from the Metroplan region can earn bonus points when applying for selected HUD grants for projects that further sustainability goals and principles. Learn more.

The HUD grant and the ICAP ended on March 31, 2015. But many of the partnerships will continue as Metroplan and the Regional Planning Advisory Council work to support the goals and objectives set forth in Imagine Central Arkansas: Blueprint for a Sustainable Region and in the Jump Start initiatives.
